George Mitchell is a former United States Senator from the State of Maine. He became a U.S. Senator in 1980 upon the resignation of Edmund Muskie, who resigned to become United States Secretary of State. He was a member of the U.S. Senate until 1995 (he did not run for re-election in 1994). 
Senator Mitchell is credited most with his work on the Northern Ireland Peace Process and his work investigating the use of steroids in United States Major League Baseball. Mitchell released a report on steroid use in baseball in December, 2007
